    The end of the annual tax form will be announced by George Osborne today as he promises to bring in digital tax accounts for all individuals and small businesses. New tax accounts, to be unveiled in the Budget, will be accessible at any time from a computer, smartphone or iPad. They will be similar to an online bank account. The Treasury believes the switch to digital will make it much easier for the 11m taxpayers and 1.8m companies who currently fill in an annual tax form to pay the right tax at the right time without filing a return. It describes the current system as “complex, costly and time-consuming. When people log on to their account, they will be able to see how their tax is calculated as HM Revenue & Customs automatically updates it with information from employers, the Department for Work and Pensions, pension providers and banks. People will be able to pay the taxes they owe when it suits them – for example, by linking to a bank account so they pay in instalments or by Direct Debit.

    HSBC has launched its most ambitious lending package yet for small business owners, making £8bn available to SMEs throughout the United Kingdom. The scheme is certainly a nationwide one. The £8bn will be dispersed throughout 43 tranches across Britain. ‘‘Too often we’ve heard smaller, domestic businesses ask whether we are as committed to them as we are to big global firms,’’ said Ian Stuart, head of commercial banking at HSBC.

    The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Singapore’s GIC, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec are investing in a UK mobile phone operator. The four investors have joined Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual in the £3.1bn ($4.78bn) purchase of a 33% stake in the UK’s combined Three and O2 networks.

    The funds are investing alongside Hong Kong holding company Hutchison Whampoa (HWL), which owns Three and is paying Telefonica £9.25bn for O2 in a deal backed by £6bn in bank finance. GIC and the CPPIB will each invest £1.1bn.
